Rules of this World
The Rules of Early Earth are simple; Civilization does not exist except in the most rudimentary of tribal villages. There are no gods, other than Mother Nature herself, who still rules over the planet with a tight grip. A tight, but loving grip. All magic in the world is like her; Wild. Uncontrollable. Untameable. At this point, humans are still not alone on the global scale, and the world is rich with the wild fey, the graceful elves, and the monstrous demons. The world is a dangerous place, and one is likely to be killed without the protection of the tribe. Inter-tribal warfare is common, and people from one clan are always eager to lay waste to another, or pick off a stray member.
Humanities magics is limited to wild imaginings, tending to go astray as often as the mind. After years of dedication one might be able to hold some limited form of control over the magics, and thus become a rudimentary witch of sorts, using rituals and other methods to put as much control into it as possible. Human sacrifice for the purpose of casting magic is a common practice--so common that it is not even looked down upon, and there are as many ways to sacrifice as there are rituals.
In short, magics require rituals, some of the more powerful requiring ritualistic sacrifice--either of ones friends or ones enemies. If alone, more often than not you will be killed. Elves, fairies, pixies and other fairy-tale creatures exist, and most tend to play with humanity.
